Bio

After losing his best friend to suicide, battling his own mental health challenges, including decades of passive suicidal ideation, and better understanding what was (and was not) available to attempt survivors, ideators or other struggling, Sean created the Suicide Noted podcast in the summer of 2020 in an effort to help more people in more places feel a little less shitty and a little less alone. He has since had more than 280 open conversations with survivors from around the world, including 45 U.S. states and 24 countries.

Sean is also the creator and curator of True Stories that Matter, an organization dedicated to helping honest people tell hard stories on stages of all kinds. His own stories and talks have been featured on several national platforms, including TEDx, the Moth, the Risk! podcast, Story Collider, USA Today Storytellers Project, Stories from the Stage, Story Jam, This is My Brave and NAMI NC. In 2022, he wrote and performed his second full-length solo show, The Space Between, which combines personal narrative storytelling and public audio from his podcast.

Sean received a Masters Degree in Education from Fordham University and has spent 30 years presenting in classrooms, performing on stages and speaking into microphones. He has spent the bulk of the last 15 years doing what he can to create spaces for people, particularly those who are often overlooked, silenced and marginalized, to be seen, heard and hopefully understood. In addition to the Suicide Noted podcast, this work has included:

- Talk of Hope, community radio program/speaker series in NC

- Buenos Aires Storytelling, open mic in English

- Sotto Voce, documentary theater company in NC

- Life Out Loud, immersive theater and live lit performances in Argentina

- Oxford Seminars, trainer for international language teachers

Moving forward, Sean’s primary goals are to expand the reach and impact of his message by continuing to grow the podcast and speaking on more stages - both in person and virtually - around the world.

Less Shitty Less Alone Listening

This isn’t a clinical talk. It doesn’t offer quick fixes or empty platitudes. It centers on voices that are often excluded — and models a kind of presence and perspective that doesn’t manage, rescue, or medicalize. It’s prevention - or reduction - by listening, not by control. While this interactive presentation is always customized, it typically centers on a core set of ideas: the epidemic of both suicide and loneliness; the issue with “just talk about it”; a culture of outsourcing empathy; the Silence Paradox and the Space Between; the other sides of awareness and prevention; and some simple, non-intuitive conversational tools to help people in despair or distress feel less alone.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- A framework for listening without fixing or labeling or any of that yuck
- The power of the 3-second silence
- The three key kinds of questions to keep convos open
- How the LSLA Model can be realistically applied in your lives with your people

Suicide Noted Live

Modeled after a conversation for a live audience at NAMI NC's annual conference, this is a unique opportunity to experience the ins and outs of these kinds of raw talks and how they aim to help people feel a little less shitty and a little less alone. While opportunities currently exist to hear from survivors, this presentation is unique in both the depth in which we discuss survivors’ lived experience as well as the chance to hear from one of our guests and/or from someone who is open to speaking from your community. This presentation includes ample time for Q&A. If you’d like, we can record this conversation and include it on our podcast!

CORE CONCEPTS & KEY TAKEAWAYS

- A deeper awareness of suicide and suicidality
- Honest insight from those who have lived - or are living - through it
- A framework for listening without fixing or labeling or any of that yuck
- A call to examine how we engage with one another and how we can do better

Testimonials (1)
  • Until 15 months ago, I was a stranger to suicide, and gave it little thought. And then it hit home -- I woke up one Saturday morning to find my partner (who had been struggling with depression) in the basement, dead by suicide. My world changed in a instant. I have since joined some suicide loss support groups, and almost everyone there had the same questions that I had, i.e. what was going through their minds in the hour or even minutes before this happened. We, of course, have no answers, but were nevertheless haunted by this question. However, then I found Sean's podcast, and it shed some light on the topic. Some of those who had attempted suicide expressed relief, direction, peace, etc., with their decision, which in a macabre way, was comforting to those of us who were suffering through suicide loss and had this question burning in our brains. I have listened to almost all the episodes, and I recommend this podcast to all the people I have been meeting who are suffering through suicide loss and the complicated grief that accompanies such a devastating loss. You are doing an awesome job, Sean, and these first-hand accounts and discussions bring a sense of relief and consolation to those of us who are trying to understand why our loved ones chose the path they did.
