Growing up in the tough streets of Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati, he faced poverty and abuse from an early age, finding solace only in nature, and the dream of being a dr. After a tumultuous childhood marked by homelessness and dropping out of school, Ronald found himself in prison at twenty-one, serving almost seven years for felonious assault.
But even in the confines of prison, Ronald's entrepreneurial spirit shone through. He sketched clothing designs as a means of coping with frustration and boredom, laying the foundation for what would later become Grapevine Collection. Upon his release, Ronald faced the harsh reality of reintegration into society, struggling to find employment and ending up homeless.
Determined to turn his life around, Ronald embarked on a journey of self-education and entrepreneurship. He immersed himself in research at the Cincinnati Library, attended classes offered by the Small Business Association, and reached out to investors to bring his clothing line to fruition. Grapevine Collection, with lines like C-town Apparel and OHIO HOME APPAREL, not only became a successful business venture but also earned Ronald recognition from the city for his work with youthful offenders and his Cincinnati-themed clothing.
However, tragedy struck in 2015 when Ronald's oldest son, Trepierre, lost his battle with manic depression and died in a confrontation with the police. This devastating loss propelled Ronald into a new mission: to understand and address the root causes of mental illness and childhood trauma. Despite his grief, Ronald committed himself to being part of the solution. He obtained certifications in mental health first aid and began developing the #STRIKEBACK app to provide support for those battling depression and suicidal thoughts.
Today, Ronald Hummons is not only a successful entrepreneur but also a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and systemic change.
