Staying Happy Being Productive: The Big 10 Things Successful People Do

Every happy family is the same. Every unhappy family is unhappy in their own way. Leo Tolstoy – in the first line of his book Anna Karenina. The habits of success are few. The habits of failure are legion. In looking at the lives of successful, happy people, Dr. Hall observed that they all share ten basic habits of life. In this presentation, upon which his book of the same title is based, Dr. Hall outlines the Big Ten things that happy successful people do. 1. Spiritual Life 2. Thought Life 3. Exercise Life 4. Nutritional Life 5. Rest / Sleep Life 6. Recreational Life 7. Money Life 8. Work Life 9. Social Life 10. Love Life

DIY Brain – Habit Formation

In this presentation, participants will learn, from real life examples, how to change their bad habits into good habits. There are three mechanisms for habit change: novel reminders, irritating reminders, and stimulus control.

Making Better Decisions

This training event will outline the particular ways that professionals are distracted from making good decisions for their clients, customers, and employees. The key job requirement for a professional is good decision-making. A growing body of research indicates that good decisions are not purely rational. Attendees will be trained in understanding the components of a good decision and the factors that can impair their ability to make excellent decisions for their clients.

Rationalizing Your Way into an Ethical Problem

Many factors play into fraudulent behavior, but self-deception (justification or rationalization) is one of the central components. Lawyers will learn the factors that contribute to the slippery slope of fraudulent behavior and how to prevent it.

Changing the Culture

In a wide-ranging discussion of workplace culture, attendees will learn how they can change the culture in their workplace. With a focus on peak performance in the workplace, participants will learn how to increase performance and comradery at work. Participants will learn how to apply emotional intelligence in real life (Hint: It starts with self-awareness), how motivation actually works, how to communicate in ways that are both natural AND helpful, how to gain buy-in on new initiatives, and how to avoid destructive rationalization.

Admitting Your Weakness

Very often, human beings prefer NOT to admit their weakness. Based on the work of Robert Cialdini, attendees will learn why admitting a weakness can actually strengthen their credibility. They will learn that most decision-making and persuasion is not logical, but emotional. They will learn why, from ancient history and modern research, admitting a weakness actually makes the speaker more credible. A must have for all professionals in the attitude change business.

Persuasion and Influence

Based on the groundbreaking work of Robert Cialdini and the ancient historical works on attitude change, participants will learn how to influence others to change their attitudes and behavior. There are no “secret hacks” for mind control here, but participants will learn principles, grounded in research and the historical record, that have helped human beings influence others throughout history.

Ikigai

The Japanese word often translated as: a sense of purpose in life or a reason for living. In this presentation, attendees will learn the essential components for finding purpose and passion in life and work. This is done by first understanding one’s personality, principles, and skills. In the end, participants will discover what they need to know and do to flourish in life.

Nutrition and Peak Performance

Professional athletes take great care about what they put in their bodies. Elite business owners and professionals take much the same care when they choose what they eat, drink, and what supplements they use. In this presentation, participants will learn what behaviors will help the brain grow and repair into old age – and help to prevent cognitive decline.

Neurobiology of Happiness

What exactly happens in the brain of a person who is happy versus someone who isn’t? Participants will learn enough about the brain to understand how to help themselves become happy. Participants will learn both large level brain biology and a bit about the microscopic view of the brain. Participants will learn why the word “neuroplasticity” is so important to learning, recovery, and happiness. Finally, with the help of our friend Tarzan, participants will learn what happens in the brain to reinforce happiness or misery.

Stress Refresher

In a lively and fun event, participants will learn how their bodies reacts to stress, how physical illnesses are often caused or aggravated by stress, how stress can be good (honest, it is true), practical ways to manage stress. Participants will learn how interpersonal conflict creates stress, the phases and physiology of the stress reaction, and many practical steps to reduce stress. We will discuss the way to the defense against stress (how to stop bad stress).

Fear and Trust in Leadership

In this presentation, participants will learn why fear is a derailer in leadership relationships. They will also discover why it is so hard to train employees. They will grow in their awareness of what they need to do to become trustworthy leaders.

Reimagining Leadership

Human beings believe many falsehoods about leadership. In this refreshingly honest look at leadership, participants will learn many of the myths they once believed about leadership are not only false but flat out damaging. They will be shown new models of leadership that more accurately fit human beings as social creatures.

The Neuroscience of an Emotionally Intelligent Leader

There are five basic qualities of an emotionally intelligent leader. Participants will learn each of the five qualities and how they build on each other to make a successful leader. The leader’s one tool for success is his or her brain. Participants will learn how to improve their brain health and thus their ability to think more clearly. Based on recent research in neuroscience, participants will learn the neuroscience on (1) how to monitor their thoughts and emotions (self-awareness), (2) how to manage their own thoughts and emotions (self-control), (3) how to monitor the thoughts and emotions of others (empathy), and finally (4) how to manage the thoughts and emotions of others (influence / leadership).

Neurobiology of Peak Performance

Peak performance in any endeavor is primarily about peak mental condition. In this one-hour presentation, participants will learn how to improve the performance of their brain. Certain brain chemicals are central to the growth and repair of the brain (and thus the brain’s capacity for learning and growth). Participants will learn which nutritional and behavioral habits will increase their brain’s capacity to repair and grow – so they can have peak performance in their work and life.

Joy and Courage

In this presentation, participants will learn why positive emotions, such as joy create more creativity and resilience from difficulty. They will also learn that becoming “anti-fragile” is even more important than becoming resilient. They will also learn why courage is often thought of as the first virtue, for without it, none of the rest can be pursued. Imminently practical, participants will leave knowing ways to change their lives for the better.

Decisions, Distraction, Deception

This training event will outline the particular ways that executives are distracted from making good decisions for their clients, customers, and employees. The key job requirement for an executive is good decision-making. A growing body of research indicates that good decisions are not purely rational. Attendees will be trained in understanding the components of a good decision and the factors that can impair their ability to make excellent decisions for their clients. Attendees will learn about the common decision-making errors that can affect their judgment. One variable is the use of information. Executives are inundated with information. Too much information can impair an executive’s attention and ability to focus on client needs. Many factors play into fraudulent behavior, but self-deception (justification or rationalization) is one of the central components. Executives will learn the factors that contribute to the slippery slope of fraudulent behavior and how to prevent

All Dressed Up and No Place to Go – Productive Preparation for Retirement

As the largest group of people in the last century approach retirement, many have the plan of an extended vacation. They do not know that plenty of money and plenty of time does not equal happiness. In this presentation, learners will discover the five ingredients to a happy life – and a fulfilled retirement. They will also discover the importance of finding purpose in the later years of their lives, planning for their death, and living without fear of death.

Curing Paralysis: Overcoming Decision Paralysis

Many times, fear or anxiety keeps people from acting. Four basic motives – fear, curiosity, desire for wealth, and purpose – drive much of human behavior. The only way to overcome a maladaptive motive is to replace it with a more adaptive motive. Learners will discover which motives are powerful enough to overcome maladaptive anxiety and practical tactics for replacing anxiety with desire for wealth and purpose.

Managing Your Clients’ Emotions

Service professionals are very often practical psychologists. Managing client emotions is sometimes the most important job they have. In this presentation, learners discover practical tactics for identifying and soothing ruffled emotions in their clients. They also learn the importance of negative emotions on memory and decision-making. With help, clients can avoid making bad decisions and forgetting what is most important.

Risk

Human beings misapprehend their risks – very often, to their peril. In this presentation, learners will discover two of the most common fears that humans have, how to address those fears, and how to correctly estimate their risk. Using real life examples from Dr. Hall’s life, learners will see how to overcome these two fears and embrace calculated risks for a more abundant life.

Providing a Path in Uncertain Times

In this presentation, participants will learn: Fear and worry are different. How to turn worry into productive planning. The relationship between fear and control. The relationship between fear and information gathering. How the media uses fear to sell commercials. How the brain makes us mis-apprehend risk. Why a worried mind keeps us from solving problems. Finally, participants will learn how to limit and manage information to manage worry.

Conquering Worry in an Age of Panic

When people are unsure of what is right, they typically imitate the behavior of the people around them. When everyone else is panicking, they tend imitate the panic and rush headlong into bad decisions and foolish behavior. In this presentation, participants will learn to identify their unproductive thoughts that drive unpleasant emotions. They will learn how to manage those thoughts and emotions to prevent foolish behavior. They will understand what happens in the brain to keep them from thinking clearly – and the habits necessary to change their brain.

Why Smart Leaders Fail

In this presentation, participants will learn to identify three pathological types of leaders and the seven habits of spectacularly unsuccessful people. Strong, charismatic, benevolent people can do any of these seven habits. Learners will discover how to avoid these seven disastrous habits and replace them with more productive habits.

Building the Dream Team

People typically think that problems in the workplace are “communication problems.” If they could just communicate better, then the problem would be solved. In this presentation, participants will learn that there are at least four different classes of communication problems, but more importantly, there are at least five types of problems that no amount of better communication will ever solve. Participants will learn self-management tactics to be more productive in solving both problems and communication problems.

Becoming Anti-Fragile

Through a series of lively examples, attendees will learn the necessary ingredients for building resilience – which is the ability to bounce back after adversity. In crisis situations, the development of resilience is necessary for long term performance and the avoidance of burnout. Attendees will learn of the necessity of adversity in the creation of resilience as well as the importance of practice and preparation for adversity. They will learn the three psychological components of resilient leaders as put forth by hardiness researchers Salvatore Maddi and Deborah Khoshaba. They will also learn the importance of locus of control, the illusion of control, and the value of persistence.

Information Overload and Decision Fatigue

Too much information! How do we make important decisions? Most professionals spend a significant portion of their days managing information, yet at the end of the day, they feel addled and mentally exhausted. Current research on information processing and decision-making shows that there are mental, physical, and emotional consequences on people, as well as consequences for the organization. At the end of the hour, participants will know why. Participants will also learn common misconceptions about how we handle information. For example, we think that more information will help us make better decisions, when it probably won’t. They will also learn what has changed in the last fifty years to overwhelm us. Participants will learn specific tactics for handling the overload and cognitive strategies to adopt, so they can make better decisions to serve their people and businesses while maintaining a healthy life.

The One Thing – Essentialism, Meaning and Goal Planning

In this event, participants will learn the value of Essentialism – the ruthless elimination of the unnecessary. They will learn the importance of making plans in concordance with their own values to pursue meaning. They will learn the importance of “I care, but not that much” as a life philosophy (and its connection to ancient Judeo-Christian, Buddhist, and Stoic philosophies). They will learn new, 3-year time limited goal setting strategies, including “working backwards.” They will learn how to make their own “Vision Board” and participate in the “Day in the Life” exercise to help them imagine the look and feel of the life they want.

Developing Leadership in Yourself and Others

Leaders are made, not born. There are a number of lessons that all leaders must learn to be effective:
Overcoming your fear of rejection.
Overcoming your fear of pain.
The delay of gratification (the master skill).
Developing character and moral virtue through adversity.
Attendees will learn the difference between a leader and a bully. They will also learn the five bases of a leader’s power. We will end on which actions will help them learn to be a leader and develop it in others.

Handling Difficult Conversations

Every person has to handle difficult conversations. Uncover the mistake that communication trainers have been in the workplace for the last 20 years. Understand why sometimes talking about a problem gets you nowhere. Learn what really matters in resolving workplace tension. Participants will learn how to de-escalate almost any conflict, the four stages of an argument, as well as the best way to intervene. They will learn, with one easy example, how to manage their temper.

How to Tick off Your Boss and Co-Workers without Knowing it

Discover 10 blind spots in your interactions with your co-workers and why no one has ever told you before. Learn how to spot them in yourself and others. Learn the vocabulary to overcome these career and relationship stoppers. Participants will learn the rules of interpersonal communication and how breaking those rules can lead to career dead ends.

Horse Sense for the Fearful Investor

Financial Service Providers are practical psychologists. Twenty percent of their work is math, eighty percent is psychology. When the markets are volatile, investors become fearful and need the help of a seasoned financial service provider to help them not make foolish decisions with their retirement. In this one-hour keynote, financial service professionals will learn ancient philosophy, neurobiology, and barbeque tips. They will learn the ancient philosophy of the essential nature of human beings. They will learn the neurobiology of why their clients are fearful, what is making them so afraid (barbeque tips) and, most importantly, how they can inoculate their clients from those fears. With practical horse-sense examples, and with things they see every day, financial service professionals will leave with practical tactics for helping their clients.

Horse Sense for the Leader Advisor

The follow up keynote to “Horse Sense for the Fearful Investor,” financial services professionals will learn how they can become trusted advisors to their fearful clients. They will learn the three central components of establishing a trusting relationship with their clients. They will also learn to quickly identify the types of clients that are likely to be unhappy with their service – long before the unhappiness begins. They will learn their unique value in an age of robo-investing, online trading, and increased government regulation. Financial services professionals can’t lead their clients until they have first led themselves.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Why is it that people stay in their comfort zone? In this event, participants will learn the neural and behavioral reasons why people like to stay right where they are. They will also learn the characteristics of people who get out of their comfort zones and make a difference in the world. The characteristics aren’t genetic but can be learned. Participants will learn the cognitive strategies necessary to make changes in their lives and work.

Conquering Clutter!

You have piles of papers. Piles of stuff. Little doo-dads tucked in little cubbyholes all around your house or office. People criticize you, but you know where everything is…. Even so, you still wish it could be different. Learn and recognize the patterns of thinking that keep you bound to your stuff. Learn how Obsessive-compulsive disorder is related to being a pack-rat. Find out how to get rid of lots of stuff, without getting rid of the things that are most important. Practical tactics on de-cluttering and working with those who are packrats.
