Bio

Rakia Finley is an American software executive, Women in Tech Leader, full-stack developer, Salesforce MVP, mother, private investor, and philanthropist. She is best known for her work with the Obama Administration on their "Girls in STEM" initiative and continues to develop innovative technology solutions and community initiatives that promote diversity.

Named FemTech's 2016 & 2017 Powerful Woman Programmer, she is one of the highest-earning African-American females in the software industry and North America's first black female owner of a private software and product development firm.

Rakia was raised by a single mother in Portland, Oregon. On weekdays—after school—Rakia would spend her evening in a cubicle waiting for her mother to get off work. This is where Rakia got her first chance to enter data into a custom database; there was no turning back. At 15 years old, Rakia had convinced the Washington Hospital Center to hire her to help their billing department. After three months, the department reported an increase in accuracy, turn around, and detailed data. After one year of working there, Rakia produced the efforts of a five-person database team and moved their 78% paper process to 10% moving their billing system to over a 98% efficiency process in 2002. By 19, she was the founder of PinStripe Consulting, a database development firm. After delivering over 200 custom database solutions to Virginia and Washington, DC nonprofits, she launched Surge Assembly, a full-service software development firm focused on enhancing company revenues and resources. Her determination for better software-led her to build a custom solution for Starwood Hotels in 2006, making them on the first leading hotel, with virtual booking and room management.

Credited with creating a more realistic approach to data, innovation, business development, and solution-based engineering, Finley continues to revolutionize how organizations and businesses utilize technology as a resource for enhancing exceptional growth.

By 2010, Rakia had reinvented Surge Assembly with a focus on educating leaders on active engineering and software development, with an underlying emphasis on inclusion, diversity, executive mindfulness, and removing bias. Finley has also emerged as an entrepreneur's dream, delivering products that average receiving over $27 million in acquisition in as fast as six months. In 2015, Finley Co-Founded FIN Digital, a full-service senior-level development firm, building artificial intelligence, natural language processors, software, and hardware applications for over 300 founders and organizations. In 2018, Copper & Vine - a creative solutions agency in the business of reimagining - was formed as an augmentation of the FIN Digital work to blend Rakia's passions: architecting award-winning technologies, making companies that scale, and building brands that produce results.

How Unconscious Bias Affects Product Development & User Experience Design

User experience design is one approach to addressing the issues of unconscious bias often found in today’s technology. Unconscious bias is an often overlooked and undervalued aspect of UX design since the little details seem to be so minor to us, however, these minor details can have large and lasting impacts. Designing a user experience without paying attention to unconscious biases is leaving out small changes that, in turn, alienate large demographics of people and shrink your client base. On the other hand, making these small changes could be just the kickstart your product needs to expand and catch on within other demographics. This presentation will detail how to identify and overcome unconscious bias in order to achieve the maximum client or consumer base possible.

In this session, we'll discuss how to identify our bias and when it does to us when designing for our users. Through activities, we'll identify what is needed to eliminate bias and build with everyone in mind.

A black woman, CEO and developer walk into a workspace

The question, “What’s it like being a [INSERT TITLE HERE] in the industry” is a question we attempt to answer within the tech ecosystem daily that generates separation among our staff. However, this conversation at times is done to generate change while really creating division and never seems to get to the root of its issue. In this presentation we’ll discuss — the bigger issue within diversity within our development team. When unconscious bias affects how are teams work together and deploy innovations what happens? This session will discuss identifying your unique strengths, allowing your purpose to lead the way, and knowing what concessions you’re willing to make without resentment to relieve technology of bias production.

“Changing your Narrative”

As young women enter the workforce they are normally immediately given a label and then given tasks, pay, and opportunities according to that label. Changing your narrative is taking control of your life, your aspirations, and your future but it requires you to control the narrative that is generated about you. As women in a male-dominated workforce, it can be difficult to simply exist without being automatically defined. Changing your narrative is hard, it takes courage and bravery. In this workshop you will learn how to speak up and to talk about yourself, your career, your goals, and your expectations of others without limiting yourself or your potential.

“You CAN have it all: Entrepreneurship, Marriage, and Success”

At some point in your life, someone will probably ask you how your work affects your home life, your marriage, and/or your children. A question that may never be asked of your male counterpart. And as this person calls your entire existence into question, and you will be able to confidently say “My work puts food on the table, puts a roof over our heads, and provides the best possible example of success for my children.” To get to this place, to feel like you have it all together, is tricky. This talk will help identify the main struggles you will face in dating and marriage, entrepreneurship and success, and how to effectively deal with them without compromising your needs or wants.

Location, Location, Location! Using location-aware technologies to your advantage

How do we gather data for the conversational “script” of a chatbot? It seems like a hard task however, by setting up a workshop you can conduct many conversations at once and gather the data in an organized fashion. What is the benefit of Conversational AI? REDEFINING HOW WE ADVISE & LEAD

More than 50% of people now live in urban areas, and by 2050, this proportion will be 70%. Humans now spend more time on screens and indoors learning rather than connecting to nature. In a world that is increasingly becoming more urbanized, less empathetic and less connected, redefining how educators and counselors advise can offer students the freedom to dream problem solve, and mentally connect with their future – ultimately benefiting both education and mental health. These benefits occur through four key areas of interaction with the learning environments: empathic education, effective mock experiences, a space failure space, and community. This keynote hits all four key areas, providing a holistic experience and optimum exposure to the ability to try different things for the betterment of the goal at hand. This keynote is a talk that activates innovation, encourages empathy, and promotes creative problem-solving by using Rakia's personal story and business experiences.
