Former NASA Engineer

Rachel is a former NASA aerospace engineer with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. She's also a lifelong artist, and an expert in designing for color-blindness. She noticed an invisible problem at work: people with color-blindness were missing out on visual information, and people with normal vision were either unaware or unsure what to do about it. She dove into the scientific research, collected design tools and techniques, and put it all together in a webinar that she has been using to educate the NASA workforce since 2021.

Our Colorblind Blind Spot: Unlocking Inclusive Design

This is a talk about color blindness. But more than that, this is a talk about putting ourselves in the other person’s shoes — our audience, our customers, our friends and coworkers. I didn't realize I was forgetting 8% of my male audience until a coworker brought an issue to my attention: our manager was colorblind and wouldn't be able to read a spreadsheet I made. I had an Oprah aha! moment and started obsessively researching how to design for color-blindness.
Now I'm sharing how we can all make more thoughtful choices, which starts with understanding our audience. I show you how color-blindness works and give you a taste of what the world looks like when you have it. Next, I teach you easy steps to take to avoid creating hard-to-see content, like using contrast and embracing minimalism. Finally, I show you more advanced tools for creating your own color palettes and testing your graphics for accessibility.
