My name is Ntobeko Mafu, and my journey has been one of overcoming adversity, healing from childhood trauma, and transforming pain into purpose. Growing up in a home affected by gender-based violence (GBV), I learned early on the importance of emotional intelligence and how to build resilience to ensure I wouldn’t carry the weight of my past into adulthood. My experiences have shaped my journey and fuel my passion for empowering others to rise above their circumstances.
At 17, I became the primary caregiver for my father during his illness. Seven months later, after his passing, I found myself taking on the responsibility of supporting my family. Despite the hardships, I was determined not to let my circumstances define me. I worked as a cashier at Pick n Pay while simultaneously completing three years of university. It wasn’t easy, but I knew that education and hard work were my pathways to a better future.
In my second year of university, I released my debut book, Letters to Whoever Needs to Hear This. The book reflects my personal journey of healing and provides practical advice on building and nurturing emotional intelligence, so we don’t carry childhood trauma into adulthood. Writing this book was a turning point in my life—it allowed me to share my story with others and, in turn, help others find their own strength to heal.
With the profits from my book, I was able to start my business, Madame Clucks Alot. The business is rooted in sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly practices, and community empowerment. Through Madame Clucks Alot, we not only promote green living and create jobs but also encourage others to pursue entrepreneurial ventures that make a positive impact on both the environment and society. So far, the impact we’ve made has been incredible, and I am proud of the work we’re doing to create sustainable opportunities for local communities.
As a speaker, I am passionate about sharing my story with others—particularly children/ teenagers/ young adults from GBV-affected homes. I believe that we all have the power to rise above our challenges and create the lives we deserve. I also focus on Entrepreneurial development, Sustainable agriculture, and agroecology, helping individuals build businesses that contribute to both their personal growth and the planet’s well-being.
I have an extensive background in Entrepreneurship and Business development. During my 3 year Diploma completion at the Durban University of Technology, I completed a 3 year business incubation as well as 13 short courses in business and Agriculture.
My journey has taught me that pain can be a catalyst for change, and I’m dedicated to helping others turn their struggles into success. Through my experiences and my work, I hope to inspire others to embrace resilience, pursue their dreams, and create meaningful impact in their communities.
