Bio

Mike has pioneered a number of business units in Mergers & Acquisitions. Each became profitable in the first year of operation. He has also assisted investors and shareholders in the setting up of such businesses in 12 different countries. Earlier in his varied career he served as a church Pastor, and as a University lecturer - teaching modern literature to miners and shipyard workers!

Much of Mike’s experience is at the sharp end of industrial, commercial, and construction businesses. He estimates that he has done site visits to about 2,000 factories in 17 countries, spoken several thousand times in public all over the world - and seen most things that can go wrong, go wrong! His hobbies include rock climbing, long-distance rifle shooting, writing poetry, collecting antique maps, etc., etc.

He is on the board of several charities and was the founder Chairman of ‘Advance India’. Mike is a Fellow of both the Institute of Directors and of the Institute of Sales Management. He has a PhD in English Literature from Durham University, where he is on the Senior Common Room of Grey College. He is Chairman of the International Map Collectors Society.

Mike has contributed chapters to ‘Growing Businesses’ and its sister publication ‘Mergers & Acquisitions’, both published by Kogan Page. His academic work is published by Manchester University Press, Routledge etc. He sat for several years on two EU sponsored committees exploring succession planning for businesses.

All the above make Mike very well-travelled. He has visited over 90 countries and done business or spoken in at least 30. However, he also has travelled for mountaineering, adventure, history and cultural appreciation, charitable and church ministry. He has been held at gunpoint 3 times!

Wandering & Wondering

Suited to local groups, U3A, societies. Can do an after-dinner version too.

A humorous journey through the world, sharing my many mishaps and cultural mistakes! Standard focus on Hong Kong, Tibet, India, Uganda, Southern Africa. I can also adapt to covering Eastern Europe in hard times, Argentina, Nepal, Namibia etc. My talk on mountaineering and wilderness adventures is separate.

'Here by Dragons' - Introduction to Antique Maps

Suited to societies, arts groups, antique groups etc. I use my experience as Chair of the International Map Collector's Society to take a fun look at the weird and wonderful world of old maps including the unusual, the weird, the VERY inaccurate, map myths, etc. The romance and the artistic exuberance of old maps. Pirate maps, anyone?

Most map makers were a bit odd too -spies, King Charles II's dancing master, rascals, soldiers, frauds and Dumbledore style geographers!

Climbs That Almost Killed Me

Aimed at entertaining. Good for after-dinner etc. Personal tales of survival after various climbing accidents. I statted climing when I was 15, then spent a month in the Bavarian Alps when I was 17. I was hooked! At 18 I hitch hiked to Chamonix in the French Alps. At 21 I had my first accident - falling almost 150 feet and coming out of it with a cut hand and a purple leg!

Another time I had to put my ankle back on the joint myself and then crawl for help. Another time, I .....

'Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?'

Succession planning issues for shareholders of private companies.

Put in a General Manager? Sell to a Competitor? Wind up after selling your assets? Open market sale? What is best in your circumstance? This talk is aimed at shareholders and Directors of privately held companies. It seeke to give them some help in planning for a better future - and avoding the very common pitfalls.

Based on my experience selling companies in 30 countries, worjking for major acquirers and sitting on two EU quangos set uo to help entrepreneurs.

Ted Hughes and his relationship with animals

Aimed at a general audience. Can be made academic for schools or unversities if required. Hughes and his brother roamed the Yorkshire moors as boys. One became a game-keeper. The other became a poet. Both loved the natural world, although they often engaged with it through hunting and fishing. How did this inform Hughes's poetic development?

I am a member of the Council of the Ted Hughes Society, have published on his work with several universities, and have delivered papers on his work at the 1st, 8th and 9th International Ted Hughes Conference. In 2023 I also presented on his work at the Sorbonne, Paris. My PhD from Durham University is on his poetry.

Developing Your Negotiation Skills

Aimed at those who do not work as formal negotiators, but have discovered that they need to grow their skill-set.

Marketing Issues and Solutions for the Professions

The accountancy and legal professions in particular (but many others too) have jumped into a new marketing world. A great deal of money is being wasted on ineffective campaigns, unclear communication and un-measurable outcomes. This seminar looks at ways of improving the effect of your marketing spend.

Sylvia Plath's homes

For intelligent but non academic audiences. Plath often wrote of her home-making urge and her ambitions. This kind of thing alternated with poems dripping with rage and Daddy hatred. How can these be understood? Can they be reconciled?

My studies of Ted Hughes poetry made me very aware of his failings as a man, and drew me to the poetry of his long-deceased wife, the iconic Sylvia Plath. Visiting the places that formed a backdrop to their lives have informed this talk.

Ted Hughes and Dialect

Suited only to an academic audience studying at degree level and above. An investigation of the 'tone' of Hughes's poetry. The effect of Northern speech, intonation and words on Britain's greatest twentieth century poet.

'Improving Leadership skills'

Most leaders are made, not born. How? This seminar shares principles which can help existing leaders to grow more leaders (if they want to!); and which help people start out in leadership roles. The goal is to equip and motivate, not just to inform.
