My presentations focus on the intersection of pop culture and LGBTQ+ history, using popular movies and TV shows to illuminate the power of media to effect positive change. These talks draw on my unique background in the entertainment industry (The Jim Henson Company, Lucasfilm), as an LGBTQ activist (as part of the team that successfully brought a marriage equality lawsuit to the US Supreme Court), and as a writer at outlets that include National Public Radio, Rolling Stone, Vice Magazine, and many others.
Some examples of my recent presentations include "How Queer Sitcom Characters Changed the World, and How They Can Do it Again," "Television's Best Coming-Out Scenes, and Why Coming Out Matters," "Where Does Queer Pride Come From, and What's the Right Way to Celebrate?" and “Lessons from the Enduring Queer Joy of The Golden Girls.”
In addition to my speaking engagements, I am the author of two published books: Defining Marriage (2015) explores the personal stories of the marriage equality movement, and Hi Honey, I'm Homo! (2023) is a behind-the-scenes history of queer characters on sitcoms.
I've drawn sizable audiences to my recent talks thanks in part to my dedicated online following, which includes 250,000 subscribers on YouTube, 17,000 on Twitter/X, 7,000 on Instagram, 2,000 on Twitch, and 1,000 to my email newsletter. My writing and speaking work has been recommended by national outlets including The New York Times, Forbes, NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, and The Advocate.
