Dr. Lorena Martin was the first-woman in MLB to hold the position of Director of High Performance in Baseball Operations. She was responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Mariners physical and mental training approach of players and staff, including oversight of both the Major and Minor League’s medical, strength and conditioning, nutrition and mental skills departments. Martin’s specialty is integrating physiology, psychology, sports science, and statistical analysis to better professional athletes and others in the pursuit of maximum performance.
Prior to bringing her expertise to professional baseball, she was Director of Sports Performance Analytics for the professional basketball team, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Dr. Martin is also the author of Sports Performance Measurement and Analytics that is widely recognized in the world of sport science and sports analytics, has also collaborated in the Sports Injury Prevention and Rehabilitations, 2nd edition Chapter 3, and the book, Improving Exercise Adherence.
In addition, she also invented a Healthy Behaviors App, called Healthy Changes that has been used in research to attenuate unhealthy behaviors.
Dr. Martin has also consulted with professional athletes in individual sports such as tennis and golf.
Dr. Martin’s educational background includes earning three post-doctorates in GIS spatial analysis (2016), biostatistics (2015) and epidemiology (2014) at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. She earned her Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Miami in 2013. She earned her Master of Science, in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University in 2009 and her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Miami with a double minor in Leadership and Spanish in 2005.
Dr. Martin also spent time as a Visiting Scientist at the Salk Institute focusing on bioinformatics and has also been an invited Visiting Researcher at NASA Langley. She has taught at multiple universities including Northwestern University and the University of Miami.
Martin is an accomplished tennis player who competed at the amateur, college and professional levels.
Dr. Martin is pioneering the way for not only other women but minorities as well, with her volunteer efforts as Chair of the Hispanic Advisory Council for the USTA Southern California Section, and serving as Vice Chair for the Diversity and Inclusion committee.
