The Audacity to Occupy

Workshop discussing the book launch for "A Kaleidoscope for Empowered Action", in which I am a co-author. I spoke about decolonising the curriculum, tensions of unbelonging in Higher Education and my chapter in the book, "The Audacity to Occupy".

How to be an ally

This interactive workshop empowers staff in higher education to understand allyship and its role in fostering inclusivity within academic environments. Participants will explore key concepts like privilege, bias, and systemic inequality, alongside practical strategies for supporting colleagues and students from marginalised groups. Through case studies, discussions, and actionable exercises, attendees will learn how to challenge inequities, amplify underrepresented voices, and create a culture of belonging. The session focuses on self-awareness, accountability, and building confidence to act as effective allies in both individual and institutional contexts.

Building the Anti-Racist Classroom

Organising for Liberation Workshop, Racial Justice and Student Movements:
Discussing the impact of systemic racism on students from marginalised backgrounds and also the challenges that exist for student movements trying to enforce systemic change from within Higher Education institutions i.e. Decolonising the Curriculum

Tensions of (Un)Belonging

This is the basis of my academic thesis. In my thesis, I share insights from these movements and the experiences of several students from the global majority - their experiences of marginalisation in higher education institutions are very common. This is the data.

Drawing from data collected through interviews conducted with students engaged in decolonising efforts at the University of Kent and my own observations of events hosted by student decolonial groups involved in contemporary decolonial activism across universities in the UK, I discuss how Black People and People of Colour (BPOC) students agree that universities have done very little to support impactful and long-term changes. This has had an adverse effect on students' sense of

  • Witnessing Lisa Shoko speaking for the first time was a pleasant surprise. I had no knowledge of her speaking background and went in with unsuspecting ears. It was obvious from the moment she began that she was at home in front of an audience. She can articulate her ideas well and one is thoroughly gripped throughout her time on stage. She conveys a relaxed nature when she speaks but one can still feel the passion in her words. I enjoyed listening to her a lot and hope to hear more.

  • I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Lisa speak on several different occasions. She is a natural orator, and is comfortable speaking in an engaging manner with large crowds. Aside from that, it is clear from the outset just how she is passionate about the causes she speaks about. She speaks with a sense of conviction well beyond her years and I am able to take away something new with me each time I’ve heard her speak. As consummate professional, she is able to tailor her message to her audience directly and ensures her audience is hanging onto each of her words by the end. I’ve consistently found Lisa to be engaging, and able to capture the attention of her audience regardless of the subject matter. She is truly in her element when speaking, and I hope to hear witness to this again in future.
