Bio

Linda Nazareth is an economist, author, broadcaster, and speaker. The Senior Fellow for Economics and Population Change at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and a frequent media commentator, she is an expert on demographics and trends, and uses a wide range of media to communicate her observations about a world in transition. Her own career capsulizes what reinvention looks like, and how you have to think out of the box to make the most of what you have.

Linda is the author of three books, the most recent of which is Economorphics: The Trends Changing Today into Tomorrow (Relentless Press, 2014). In Economorphics, Linda pulls looks at the megatrends in economics and demographics and and effectively tells the story of the next two decades. From the issues around higher resource prices (if groceries cost more, is Disney doomed?) through to the outlook for the stock market, she gives readers the knowledge they need to craft their futures during turbulent times.

In her upcoming book, Work Is Not a Place, Linda takes on the daunting task of explaining the future of work. There are two competing narratives out there, each claiming to explain the future of the labor market. One is all about demographics, and suggests that we are headed to shortages of labor. The other is focused on technology, and claims that robots are going to take everyone’s job. Which is the correct version of the future – or is either or them are an accurate telling of what comes next? From gig jobs through to talent wars, Linda carefully works though what is happening to the world of work and the way that it will affect our lives and organizations.Linda has also been published in many other publications including the Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper. Her own website, www.relentlesseconomics.com fills an almost-empty niche combining analysis of economics, labor markets, demographics and generational issues.

Unusually for an economist, Linda spent over a decade as a full time television broadcaster in-house economist for Business News Network (BNN), the business cable arm of CTV (Canada’s biggest private sector broadcaster). Daily she covered the economic news of the day on-air, looking at the markets and the economic indicators and giving viewers analysis and context. Linda was also one of the first economists to accurately warn of the global recession and its likely severity. Prior to joining BNN, Linda was a Senior Economist with CIBC, and earlier in her career she was an economist with the federal government where she specialized in demographic and labor market forecasting. She holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in economics, both from the University of Toronto.

Linda speaks frequently to conferences, corporations and business groups, helping them to look at the big picture and then dilute it down to what it means for their organizations.

The world is changing and so is the very notion of ‘work’. For years we have been told that our aging workforce will mean a shortage of workers in many industries. More recently, the narrative has changed to one where robots do everyone’s work and there are not enough jobs to go around. Which view of the future is correct? How will our lives and organizations change as we navigate the changing realities? And how do we best prepare ourselves for what comes next? In this much-requested presentation, In this much-requested presentation, Linda Nazareth casts an economist’s eye to the way the big trends and sketches out what looks to be an exciting and challenging future.
