All of my life I have had to make a choice, feel sorry for myself or live my life unapologetically, authentically and with unbridled enthusiasm. I chose the later.
I was born with a devastating neuromuscular disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) My parents were told that I would not live past my second birthday. How wrong they were! I am now a youthful 53 year old and have been happily married for 25 years. Despite the relentless progression of my disease I live life with passion. i had a choice, to become bitter about living with a disease that has left me a quadriplegic or embrace all of the wonderful things the world has to offer. I chose the latter. I am proud of my life! We all face challenges and we all have the decision to learn to love our lives or throw in the towel.
I am an engaging speaker. I have been a speaker with The Canadian Red Cross. I spoke to high school students on Healthy Youth Relationships. In addition I represented the Red Cross on TV and at events.
I have also worked as a Mental Health Educator and Recovery College Facilitator for Canadian Mental Health. My informal demeanour and the ability to create meaningful discussion among the participants is one of my greatest strengths.
