Bio

Kristin Smedley is a dynamic speaker, best-selling author, entrepreneur, non-profit founder, and resilience expert. Despite the staggering failure statistics in the blind community, Kristin defied the odds by raising two incredibly successful blind sons. Now, she uses her inspiring journey to empower tens of thousands of people worldwide. As the Co-Founder and CEO of the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation, the only patient organization for individuals with the blindness her sons have, Kristin has raised over $4 million and successfully advocated for a National Rare Eye Disease Awareness Day through legislation submitted in Braille.

Kristin's impactful work extends beyond fundraising and awareness campaigns. She partnered with Spark Therapeutics to help achieve the first FDA-approved gene therapy for an inherited retinal disease in the United States. Her TEDx Talk in New York City challenges societal perceptions of blindness, while her partnership with Comcast media spreads awareness of inclusive products like the X1. With her bestselling book, "Thriving Blind: Stories of Real People Succeeding Without Sight," and her children's book, "What I Can Be Is Up To Me," Kristin shares powerful stories that evoke both cheers and tears.

Recognizing the employment, literacy, and financial crisis faced by the blind community, Kristin co-founded ThrivingBlindAcademy.org. Additionally, she co-created the short film, "The Great Equalizer," which addresses the pressing issue of unemployment among the blind. Through her relentless efforts, Kristin Smedley is making a profound impact on the lives of those affected by blindness, fostering resilience, and creating a world where everyone can thrive.

SEE Differently: Set Extraordinary Expectations

Kristin Smedley acknowledges that everyone faces challenges that may seem insurmountable. While many people talk about overcoming fears and being strong, the question remains: How do you actually start? Where do you begin when your circumstances appear overwhelming?

Kristin emphasizes that our perception of these challenges plays a crucial role in our experiences. It is our perspective, how we see the problem or crisis, that determines whether we remain stuck in setbacks or launch remarkable comebacks. Using her own personal journey, Kristin demonstrates how adopting the right perception enables us to set extraordinary expectations, leading to positive outcomes.

Guiding participants to think beyond what is typically expected, Kristin empowers them to move from ordinary expectations to extraordinary ones. By doing so, she helps individuals thrive regardless of the challenges they encounter. Kristin's unique ability to inspire & empower people makes this her most popular program.

Breaking Bias: Revealing the Competitive Power of Disability

In this speech, Kristin Smedley, an expert on the topic, shares her perspective on seeing disability as a competitive edge. Having raised two blind sons who defied grim statistics, Kristin outlines through entertaining and humorous stories how their unique skills and abilities developed in navigating a world not built for blindness actually give them a competitive edge over others.

Kristin challenges the audience's preconceived notions by opening their minds to the idea that individuals with disabilities possess distinct advantages over their peers and colleagues in several areas. Through her compelling anecdotes, she demonstrates how her sons' abilities, honed through their experiences, set them apart.

Kristin also reveals how companies and organizations that include individuals with disabilities gain a competitive edge over their competition.

  • I've heard Kristin speak a number of times, including on her TEDx talk and recently delivering the keynote at a women's summit on entrepreneurship. On every occasion, Kristin challenges, motivates and touches her audience with her tale of resilience and her never-give-up attitude as she raised her two blind sons. Kristin's message transcends her own circumstances and gives her audience the confidence and courage to step out of their comfort zones and be extraordinary. Kristin certainly is. Your audience will be delighted with Kristin and her powerful message.

  • Kristin Smedley is making waves in the rare disease world influencing, inspiring and impacting many! She is on an extraordinary journey to help others thrive! It was awe inspiring to witness Kristin bring tears to the eyes of her audience and receive a standing ovation. Her journey is one of challenge and triumph and her delivery of her story is impactful and inspiring for any audience. After photographing Kristin’s speech, I had the pleasure to observe the book sales. Several people said that Kristin had changed their life. They now had a new perspective on their personal situation and life journey and would be forever changed by the words Kristin delivered. Not only are Kristin’s words impactful, her energy is palpable and brings life to the stage she is speaking from. She adds humor to situations most of us would be in bed crying over and tells her story so organically that you feel you are right along side her on her journey raising her two sons who are blind. Kristin is extraordinary!

  • First time I heard Kristin speak when she came to deliver a closing keynote presentation at Orphan Drugs and Rare Disease Global Congress in Boston last September. I really didn't know what to expect when she came on stage, but I was full of admiration when the talk was finished. Kristin is a very powerful and inspirational speaker. She is an extraordinary person who brings so much energy and passion for what she does and this, she brings on stage with her when she speaks. Listening to her is like a roller coaster ride, going through so many emotions at once, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cheer but most of all you will feel that anything is possible. It was an honour to have her at our Congress and is looking forward to working with her again in the future.
