Jose Campos Bio (English)

Jose R. Campos is an immigration attorney, nonprofit founder, and passionate advocate for underserved communities. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, followed by a Juris Doctor from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law in 2012.

Beyond his legal work, Campos is deeply committed to community impact and personal growth. He has completed both the Richmond and Marine Corps Marathons to raise funds for nonprofit organizations, and has participated in an Olympic triathlon and several mud obstacle races. A passionate traveler, he has explored 35 countries and 39 U.S. states.

Campos is the founder of The Philemon Foundation Inc., a nonprofit that provides free housing to graduate students facing extreme life challenges—similar to those he once experienced as an undocumented student in law school. His work has earned him numerous honors, including Maryland’s Leadership in Law Generation J.D. from The Daily Record, El Tiempo Latino’s 100 Most Influential People for the Hispanic Community, and The Rising Star award from Super Lawyers. He is a proud member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and several other legal associations.

Surviving The Law: Resilience, Reform, and the Journey from Undocumented to Advocate

Jose R. Campos was just 17 when he arrived in the U.S.—undocumented, alone, and without stable housing or income. In this raw and inspiring keynote, Jose recounts his extraordinary path from fast-food worker to immigration attorney, opening up about years of couch-surfing, living in fear of deportation, navigating addiction, and overcoming family trauma. He speaks candidly about what it took to survive a system never designed for him—and how those same experiences now drive his work supporting students facing the same impossible odds he once did.

This talk is a call to action for justice, a lesson in human resilience, and a testament to the impact of building systems that meet people where they are.
