Biography

At 58, I was overweight and aging very poorly. I had taken some nasty falls and could barely negotiate the basement stairs. Then I discovered resistance training. I fell in love with the barbell, and in the next two years, I lost 80 pounds and became a competitive powerlifter. But that's not the story. I am now 70 with no bone loss. I lead an active life and work as a personal trainer. As you age, you risk experiencing bone and muscle loss, balance issues, and reduced mobility. If you "Train to Age", you can stay fit and strong into your eighties! You can age like a warrior!

Author

I wrote "Train to Age" to allow active agers to understand the aging process. You can build a program to build strength, power, stability, mobility, and to increase bone density. You can take control of how you age. What's the first step? Find what you love. It's easy to build an exercise program around the things you enjoy!

Train To Age

Instead of waiting to die, you can train to age and take control over your quality of life as you age. You can build strength and stability and be more mobile. Resistance training combined with cardio is good for brain health, heart health, and longevity, and you can do it your way!

Age Like A Warrior

We can't control chronological aging—we get older yearly—but we can impact biological aging, which is how old we feel! The first step is to change how we think about aging. What lies are we telling ourselves, and how do we get past them? Building muscle can enhance the quality of your life, help protect you from falls, and keep you strong and independent.

Self-Directed Ageism

Words matter! We tell ourselves we are "over the hill" or "too old," but we're not! Society tells us "old" is bad. We are bombarded with anti-aging ads that make us believe we are not enough. Don't let the stories in your head stop you from being independent and strong as you age.

  • I had the privilege of hearing Joni speak in at an inclusive fitness and wellness retreat in 2022. I thought I was a bit young for Joni’s class as I was 31, (I’m about to be 32) but have increasing issues with aging already. So I sat through her seminar and found it very engaging. I learned facts that women even as “young” as myself should be preparing to age well. She gave me a lot to think about and consider. Her personality is warm and approachable and makes everyone feel welcome. I honestly am grateful to have attended her seminar.

  • I recently attended Joni's Age Like a Warrior presentation at the Sugar Grove Women's Club monthly meeting. Following her Train to Age recommendations Joni now encourages us to continue the "battle" so to speak. As aging adults we need to continue strength training to maintain independence and lead active lives. Joni's professional yet friendly demeanor encouraged questions and discussion throughout her presentation. Joni's talk inspired me to keep going!

  • In early May I had the extreme pleasure of hosting an Aging in Place workshop with Joni for older adults in our community. Since that evening, I have received countless reach outs by the participants about Joni's presentation. She was relatable, inspiring, motivating, and (most importantly) knowledgeable about aging actively. Her ability to communicate with a group is like no other. She makes pubic speaking look effortless. It is truly a gift. Even I (a fellow presenter) found myself taking copious notes for my own personal gain. Joni's contribution made our session shine. I look forward to working with (and learn from) Joni in the future. If you are looking for an individual with passion, a wealth of experience, and an ability to motivate a crowd...look no further.

  • Last week we heard Joni talk at our library about aging I’ve always been interested in staying strong so I could keep doing the things I love to do. She is so encouraging to those of us who are getting up in years and want to remain active. She says keep that attitude positive and never say “I can’t do that”. You never know it you don’t try. I just love her enthusiasm! Thanks Joni for reminding us to keep on keeping on!
