Bio

Hi!

I'm Jim Rowe - Education Author, Academic / College Speaker, and TV & Podcast Guest, all based on a 45yr Marketing career where Critical Thinking & Communication are our core competencies. I've spent decades training recent grads on these skills because they come out of school... and they don't have them?

RESULTS: See PROFESSOR INTERVIEWS video

Now, my core focus is to help college professors address "The Missing Link In Education" - poor workforce skills among recent grads. While 75%+ of hiring managers rate Critical Thinking & Communication as the TOP 2 SKILLS they look for when hiring, 50-75% of managers rate recent grads hired as below-proficient. WHOA - WHAT? Think about that. After all the time, emotion, and the 10's if not 100's of thousand $'s spent on a college degree - they get out and need to learn how to think and write? It's NOT RIGHT! And it's costing corporations $ billions and seriously impacting grads career opportunities and growth.

After decades in marketing, and an agency owner and also HR Director, I've interviewed 100's and hired / trained scores of recent grads on these skills. So I researched WHY this was happening and discovered for the most part.... we just don't teach them effectively...or at all.

Therefore, I wrote a simple 2-book series to help professors to address these issues. The title - GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROWE (after my last name - I'm a brand guy after all) - inspired by WHO MOVED MY CHEESE, and yes, it's a FABLE about DUCKS IN BUSINESS! Why a fable? As Dr. Susan Keith of Angelo State, TX told me the 3 reasons why she selected them for her graduate class: 1) the fable made it an ENTERTAINING way to learn, 2) they now had something simple and TANGIBLE to use, and 3) she encouraged her students to keep them as REFERENCE guides for the rest of their lives. And her students loved them. Post research indicated "92% of the students Totally Agreed that the fable story made it an entertaining way to learn better and faster!"

Book-1 focuses on STRATEGIC WRITING, a core workforce skill most professors don't teach. I finished and realized there's so much more I could teach so I wrote Book-2 The A-D-A-P-T-E-R Method (Analyze-Deduce-Author-Perfom-Tackle-Evaluate-Refine) to teach the whole process from critical thinking to communication to execution .

They are now also being used as textbooks at Kutztown U, PA (for the 2nd year) for several classes where I have been making in-person presentations to the students. They're also using 'complementary projects' I also created so students can apply the skills to real world situations. What's really cool is the professors are seeing significant engagement and importantly growing skills, including documented positive results from an IRB study.

Finally, armed with these results, there are now several more professors at 5 different universities exploring using the books, the projects, and me speaking to students going into 2026.

Let's talk. Jim

The Missing Link In Education

Poor workforce skills are hurting students’ career readiness. Regardless of the field, numerous studies show that while ~75%+ of managers rate Critical Thinking and Communication as the TOP 2 Workforce Skills they look for when hiring, in 3 separate studies between 50-75% of managers rate recent grads hired as ‘below proficient’. This panel will highlight the issue showing these specific skills are often not taught, then demonstrate an innovative teaching strategy called ‘The A-D-A-P-T-E-R Method’. It provides a logical, step-by-step guide boosting student engagement and motivation, that is being effectively utilized in several universities with favorable student and professor support.

  • I took over a retiring professor’s class and he recommended I use Jim Rowe’s GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROWE 2-book series along with projects he created so students get practical experience with his methodology. To start, I think students really need help with critical thinking and writing/presentation skills. Students lack the skills to be able to think critically and present their thoughts both on writing and speech. You have to be able to communicate, and you need to be passionate, and I think those are a couple things that are really lost today. I feel that education has probably assumed wrongfully that the students were getting this someplace else. I think since Covid things have definitely gotten worse. But this is certainly an area where we haven’t done a very good job. Both books are easy reads. You can pick up the books, and you can get a lot out of them in a short amount of time, so they are very practical. That’s what I really appreciate. I always say to my students, look every day for a golden nugget. And he has lots of golden nuggets in each chapter. I thought the content is excellent, and I think that the storytelling via the ducks fable is a good way of getting the message across. I really like Jim’s books. They get right to areas students need to improve. He explains it in a way that is easy for all academic levels. I think his books would be perfect for a freshman seminar class! The way that the books explain it is a step-by-step process and its absolute genius. You can take all this information and put it into just one type-written page. I felt like the books were a tremendous help and they did a really good job helping my students understand how to write and present a focused presentation. What was especially helpful was when Jim came and presented to our class. He did a tremendous job! He connected well with my class, and has created a very unique approach that’s missing but needed in education today. And he presents it with passion. I felt like before they heard him speak and after they heard him speak was a total difference in their writing specifically with the sponsorship letter, which was an integral part of their senior presentation. I would recommend that college professors…get the books …have your students read them… talk about them… and importantly have Jim present to your class - I know his books and presentation will really help your students. Dr. Scott Bradshaw, Kutztown University,

  • A colleague recommended Jim’s two-book fable series to help students think critically and communicate better. After reading both books, we invited him to give a three-hour Zoom presentation to our graduate class, and he kept the students engaged throughout. They loved the books! I really enjoyed the message of Book 1. I sat down and read the entire book in one sitting and felt it would provide our freshmen with a solid foundation in writing and critical thinking. With Book 2, I was eager to take notes and consider how I could incorporate its lessons not just for my students but also for my own professional development. It emphasizes the importance of being concise and purposeful, which makes communication effective. The graduate students responded enthusiastically to Book 2. They felt as I did—realizing they needed to revisit its concepts for their next assignments. They described it as "practical," "easy to understand," and "something they can use right away!" The second book contained many valuable insights, and Jim's writing style made the content easy to digest. The ducks' fable served as a great analogy, easy to remember and flowing well throughout the narrative.

  • I highly recommend Jim’s books to other professors and encourage them to invite him to present to their students, even virtually. The students gained a lot from the experience. Jim has transformed the way we can incorporate his projects from the books into our curriculum, making it much easier for professors to use them without having to create everything from scratch. His writing is accessible, ensuring that all your students can understand and engage with the material.
