Bio

With her passions for cooking, India, research and writing, Jenny’s award-winning cookbook “A Grandmother’s Legacy” has been a labour of love – a memoir that mingles the history of her family when they lived in India, with her grandmothers’ recipes that were prudently passed down through the generations. Each recipe has been lovingly researched, leading Jenny on a road of discovery about her ancestors, with her grandmothers’ legacy continuing to assist in providing clues to their rich and eventful past.

Jenny has travelled extensively throughout India for thirty years, and has also visited many other countries, including Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, and America. Her travelogues and written anecdotes of her journeys are much enjoyed by her family and friends

With over 100 talks given across the world, Jenny provides her audience with a unique insight into this little known heritage closely linked to British history pages.

Now a writer, Jenny has had a colourful career as a Travel Buyer (which spawned her passion for travel and meeting people) and before that was in television production at the BBC in London. Any spare time that she has is spent doing painting, home decorating, jewellery making, listening to music, photography and enjoying nature.

Five generations of my Anglo Indian family seen through the eyes of their granddaughter

A highly visual presentation and talk, I provide the audience with an amazing set of sepia images from her family collection going back to 1865, as well as personal snippets of stories from her family which portray a unique glimpse into a family's involvement in India whilst of British ancestry. I talk about the Railway, Telegraph, Schools and other British institutions set up in India which her grandfathers and relations worked in, as well as the history and provenance of an unknown cuisine - the first fusion food of its type - Anglo Indian food, a mix of British and Asian cultures and ingredients.

My travels around India

An engaging and descriptive visual imagery showing true accounts of my adventures and travels.

Great Aunt Constance's trek out of Burma in 1943

An enlightening and descriptive presentation on Powerpoint and a talk on a personal account of a great Aunt of mine (a middle class Victorian lady) who had no option but to walk 1,000 miles out of Burma to the safety of India in 1943 when the Japanese had invaded Burma. Plenty of sepia images and historical facts and accounts of this treacherous journey which thousands undertook on foot when all ways out of Burma had gone (aircraft bombed, railway lines blown up and boats had all gone...

Family History talk on my British family and why they were in India for five generations

My talks leads the audience from the top of the family tree with three generations of Benjamin Hardy who came from Yorkshire in the 18th century. It goes on to describe the ancestor who joined up in 1798 with the British Army and with his unit, sailed out of Portsmouth on 29th April 1798 on the East Indiaman "Dublin" for Madras. Detailed descriptions around the professions of my family who were involved in the Indian Railways, the Telegraph and Military. Mention is also made of the old recipe book which was handed down from mother to daughter for the next five generations.

Wilhelmina's cookery book which she started in 1844 in Madras

This talk describes the 4 x great grandmother of mine who at the age of just 15 sat down and started writing down her recipes from England (such as Yorkshire Pudding) for her Khansamah (cook) to follow and understand. With over 500 recipes, Jenny describes the recipes which she still follows to this day, and tells of the history behind those recipe names such as "Country Captain Curry" and "Rumble Tumble". It will delight any audience who not even interested in cookery!

A Grandmother's Legacy - Serendipity follows me

This is a popular talk of mine, it covers my actual journey from discovering an ancient recipe book which belonged to five generational grandmothers of mine to the description of those grandmothers (who were all memsahibs during the British Raj). The talk is enhanced with stories which have happened to me since writing my own memoir based on the grandmothers and their families in India - those which have been best described as "Serendipity" as the audience feels right there with the author Jenny Mallin as she describes her own journey of challenges, obstacles but also achievements and the overwhelming feeling of receiving her "Best in the World Cookbook" in 2017 title. A very interesting talk which has 100% appeal to a mixed aged group of both males and females.

  • 11th April 2019 Dear Jenny What a great history lesson!! Thank you again for such a brilliant talk. Absolutely fascinating stories of your career and development into your book and your travels back over where your ancestors lived and worked. I am sure those coincidences were not just that, but what as a Christian, I would call God moments and you were following your destiny paths. Congratulations on your award winning book and as there was great interest in obtaining copies, will you eventually do a reprint run or would you just suggest trying to get copies from EBay or Amazon? the book is obviously recording so much of the history during the British Raj rule and appealing to our academics in our U3A. I forgot to ask if you have any places left on your Indian tour and if you do, could you please email your poster electronically so I could publicise it more specifically in my notes I send out after our monthly talks. Thank you again and yes I will arrange another talk please but this may work out in a year's time or creep into 2021! In the meanwhile, thank you for such an enjoyable afternoon and very best wishes for every success with all three wishes. Linda Wain U3A Basingstoke Secretary/Organiser

  • • Anne Stanley To: Jenny Mallin 10 May at 19:28 Jenny, Your talk was excellent and with good pictures to go with the talk, it made for an excellent morning’s entertainment. I have no hesitation in recommending you to other organisations, indeed we are putting you on our website for the information of other U3As, and quite naturally, I will be recommending you to all. An excellent and very interesting talk, and to whom it concerns I have no hesitation in backing you, well done. Chris Stanley, Hartley Wintney U3A speakers organiser
