I started my working life washing cars and sweeping floors, before starting a trade as a tombstone maker. After 8 years of the hard slog, 2 years of night school, I started my public sector career in the RAAF Police. After several years in the RAAF, I moved back to Qld as a Transport Inspector, transitioned into investigation work, prosecutions and finally ended my time with Qld Transport as the State Compliance Trainer.
Chasing new direction, I moved departments to the Office of Fair Trading as an Investigation Officer. After a year I returned to training as being in front of people is where I was born to be.
In 2010 I was part of a national development project for the introduction of the Australian Consumer Law, presenting training across Qld, NSW and Tasmania and loving it.
In 2011 I took up the reigns as Manager of the Complaint Intake team, one of the busiest and most productive areas in OFT, handling approx. 16000 complaints and 2000 investigations per year.
In 2016 an internal re-structure saw me assigned to a new position of Business Improvement Manager. In this position I was responsible for leading the new direction in staff learning and development, leadership, cultural improvement and accountability. I believe strongly in workplace mentoring and coaching and sees the benefits and has developed these skill furhter in his 15 year career as a RAAF Reservist.
In recent years I have reignited my passion for public speaking and creativity taking it to the next level. I am a regular speaker at the DJAG Director General Welcomes, delivers workplace inspiration talks and was keynote speaker at the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals Symposium in 2018. I incorporate Visual Facilitation into some of my presentation but mostly my stories are a collection of working in leadership, compliance and military policing roles. I am a huge advocate for positive change with a fresh approach to how public sector workplaces should be (and it doesn’t include beanbags or ping pong tables).
I also believe in daily meditation and sees the benefits of stilling the mind even if it’s for a short time.
