Bio

Janet Luongo inspires and motivates people to express their true selves, develop supportive relationships, and create a fair and prosperous culture. She gives speeches and facilitates workshops. She taught college and all age levels, and uses visuals, humor and activities to engage audiences.

Janet addresses current issues in our nation, particularly gender and racial equity, from personal experience. For example, Janet spoke on leadership for women at colleges. In a recent webinar about understanding racism, she began by reading excerpts from her memoir, Rebellion, 1967, a story of her youth in New York City when she found purpose working for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream. After her family broke up, she developed relationships in the Black community with a mural painter, community activist, neurosurgeon and jazz musician. Webinar participants, prompted, told powerful stories of their own encounters with those we were taught to see as “The Other.”

Janet is dedicated to finding creative ways to deal with troubled times. Know your dream, express who you are, follow your own path; when you stumble pick yourself up and keep going; send compassion to all, and respect all human beings as part of one humanity.

When Janet joined the National Speakers Association in 2000, the New York City chapter asked her to chair a national speakers conference and then elected her chapter president. A NSA colleague, Jack Canfield, author of the series, Chicken Soup for the Soul, wrote a foreword for her book, 365 Affirmations on Creativity, which encourages creative thinking in all areas of life. Published in five countries, it led to speeches in the US, Canada, Costa Rica and as far as Xian, China.

Janet taught communication and public speaking, and art history at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. She founded a non-profit chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art that mounted forty exhibits and produced a film, Women Make Art, which screened at a UNIFEM film festival. Her innovative programs for underserved youth at museums in Bridgeport, Connecticut, garnered grants, awards and media.

Raised Unitarian Universalist in New York City, Janet received a Leading Light award in 2020 from The Unitarian Church in Westport where she’d served as associate director of family faith formation, and as chaplain. She designed a series of workshops, “Women and Imagination,” and started a team to promote voting rights. She recently helped plan presentations on gender equity, and building a multi-racial democracy. As leader of the Worship team, she planned summer services, and delivered several sermons herself, including “From Broken to Unbreakable.”

Janet earned a B.A. in art from Adelphi University, and a M.S.Ed from Queens College at CUNY. While teaching abroad 1978-86 at the International School of Geneva, she exhibited paintings in Paris. She resides in CT with her cat and husband Jim and they enjoy hiking with their son and his family in Colorado.

ACHIEVING YOUR SENSE OF PURPOSE

Women's Leadership Conference At Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa
The student chair of the conference introduces me as the Keynote: Janet Luongo is dedicated to the cause of diversity. She is undaunted by what strikes others as insurmountable conflicts. She will tell her story, "How I Got My Paintings to Paris Despite Stupid Bureaucrats." In that story, including my story of troubled teen years, I found a humorous way to urge the students to take risks to be true to their vision of their best life. With visual slides, activities, interactions, meditation and movement, energy slowed down and picked up. Lively discussions followed.

YOUR STORIES ABOUT "THE OTHER" - ARE THEY TRUE?

I begin by reading excerpts from my coming of age memoir, Rebellion, 1967, of people I encountered who I'd been taught to see as "Other." I then invite participants to delve into memories of their own - messages from family and culture that shaped their stories and beliefs. They recall and jot notes on encounters and relationships with those of other races, gender identities, religions; then may share their stories. We talk about what we learned from the encounters, and which messages we had to "unlearn." We can be astonished by various perspectives of others. We reveal our authentic feelings and memories in the service of honoring every human being as complicated, worthy and unique. For one Women's group, we spent four evenings on Zoom. The workshop can be delivered in two hours, half day or full day workshops. The experience can lead to profound understanding of ourselves and others, and a bonding of participants. Perfect for understanding diversity and team spirit.

VISUALIZATION TAKES YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO

I begin with a slide show about Picturing you Dreams, and how creative envisioning enabled me to achieve major aspirations. The Process for participants. 1. Warm Up Questions: What do you like to do, dream about and think you do well? 2. Picture Your Dream: Imagine, without constraints of time and money, being your best self. 3. Draw simple symbols of your dream. 4. Plan how you will journey to your dream - detail the anticipated steps, partners, resources, obstacles, alternatives. 5. Persevere. 6. CELEBRATE. At last, and when you reach your destination, and at all the stops along the way! Offered at the Danbury Library, CT. and for TUCWomen, Westport CT, and IIN health coaches, Nosara, Costa Rica, Good for personal and organizational growth, empowerment for women and for mixed groups of any age.

CREATIVITY WORKOUT - Explore your Imagination

An engaging workshop that includes inspiration, creative activity and connection, where participants are encouraged to absorb the healing power of beauty and a supportive community. No "talent" or prior art expertise is needed. In a typical session, we warm up with guided visualization to develop a feeling of calm and peace within, an inner haven to access anytime. The experience starts with activating our energy, and a fun warm-up creativity exercise. We reflect on images and art by Janet and other women artists to spark an imaginative response. Each participant then chooses a mode to express themselves: free writing, poetry, drawing, painting, movement, music, skit or a combination. We close with a circle in which each may share their process or product. It has worked for adults at the CT Commission on the Arts, for teachers and middle school students in Maine, and college students in Xian, China. This workshop can be "creatively" tailored to a client's needs.
