As a cryptologist for Naval Intelligence, he was responsible for collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting real-time signal intelligence. His service took him to the ADF in Denver, Colorado, and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, where he made significant contributions to the nation's intelligence efforts. He served his country with honor for four years, earning an honorable discharge in 1997. Following his military service, he decided to pursue higher education with the support of the Montgomery GI Bill, which provides financial assistance for education and training to eligible military personnel. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, as he embarked on a path of academic and professional growth.

James began his higher education journey at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming, one of the largest and most comprehensive community colleges in the region. After completing his studies there, he transferred to Texas A&M University-Commerce, a prestigious institution known for its diverse academic offerings. As the third-largest institution in the Texas A&M University System and the fifth-oldest state university in Texas, Texas A&M University-Commerce provided him with a solid foundation in business administration and finance.

James Etter later completed his studies at Southwest Texas University, now known as Texas State University, in San Marcos. This institution, founded in 1899, has a rich history, with notable alumni including Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States.
