Laughter Is the Best Medicine

Author Honore Nolting and her husband, Tom, used humor and laughter to navigate Tom’s late stage three cancer diagnosis in their late 20’s and early 30’s. In her book 128 Days & Counting you find laughter and tears within the same page, but no matter the emotion you feel a relentless fight, blind hope and proof that laughter can be the best medicine. In this session, learn about how they went about choosing laughter as the best medicine to manage their cancer fight.

Beating Cancer & Survivorship: The Greatest Blessing & Toughest Obstacle Course

Survivorship and beating Cancer is the most wonderful gift and privilege, but quickly became one of the greatest challenges for this young couple. PTSD, depression, and anxiety while still trying to fight for their future, including a family, were just a few of the demons on their post-cancer doorstep.

Giving Back Through Words

Following her husband’s devasting cancer diagnosis and looking for hope and guidance, she couldn’t find what she was looking for and set out to document and share their cancer experience in the hopes of giving back to a young adult cancer community. From the diagnosis, through treatment and ultimately survivorship, 128 Days and Counting gives you a raw look at the monster that is cancer.

An Unexpected Twist in an Unexpected Love Story: A Marriage Surviving Cancer

Following her husband’s rare cancer diagnosis her wedding vow “In sickness and in health” suddenly played over and over in her head. A serious illness puts a magnifying glass on a relationship and the qualities of the two people in it, and creates two roads, a road that strengthens the relationship, or the one that breaks it.

Nursing for The Patient & Caregiver - A Young Adult Cancer Caregiver's Perspective

Caregiving is an ever evolving role that requires strength and persistence. In the case of young adults, it requires a tremendous amount of hope, perseverance and the ability to adapt quickly. While there is no manual on how to be a caregiver, there are examples all over the medical ecosystem that teach through example, often not realizing they are doing so.

In this session, Honore Nolting gives a perspective on the patient experience from the caregiver’s point of view. She discusses her husband's cancer diagnosis, looks back on their experience and outlines what she wishes she would have known, and how she learned to be a caregiver from the nurses and doctors she interacted with throughout his treatments. Her role as caregiver evolved during treatment and she provides a raw perspective on the realities of young adult cancer, including the impact to a marriage, starting a family, and the importance of mental health - and how her husband's care gave her the ability to thrive.

Testimonials (1)
  • Honore Nolting recently came to speak at our Every Nurse a Leader Conference at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. She was a wonderful resource on the realities of young adult cancer and the impact the healthcare team has had on her husband’s diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. To say she was inspiring is an understatement. She shared views that opened the nurses’ eyes and will change how they see their patients. Honore was a delight. Her presentation made the audience laugh and brought tears to their eyes. In sharing her experience as a young caregiver during her husband’s cancer journey, she reignited the passion for nursing in her audience. Whether they have been caring for patients for 30 years, 5 years, or are a nursing student, they all face daily challenges making them question their place in healthcare. Honore helped them find it again. Honore gave them a perspective of the impact nurses truly make on the patient and caregiver. While Honore is not in the healthcare field, she found a way to relate to her audience and share her knowledge of diagnosis and treatment, as well as the importance of caring for the patient’s mental health. As a contracted speaker, Honore was so easy to work with. She was quick to respond and met all deadlines prior to the conference. Her presentation was well put together, eye catching, and had a personal touch to feel like the audience had known her forever. As the nurse planner for the event and per audience feedback, I would highly recommended Honore as a speaker for any healthcare related conference or event. She has a unique perspective and her knowledge would be a wonderful resource to any nurse to see the patient and caregiver as a whole throughout any cancer diagnosis and survivorship.
