The VIRTUAL Orderly Conversation

In a perfect world, meetings and presentations would move business forward efficiently and effectively. Too often, that doesn’t happen. It’s even more challenging in the virtual space.

You, your team, and your organization deserve something better. It’s time for a new approach, one that is practical and flexible enough to work in a variety of situations.

In this session, you’ll be challenged to rethink and unlearn outdated rules (think Speech 101) and replace them with a new set of tools based on the types of work you actually do. We define business presentations as Orderly Conversations®, a type of communication that combines a carefully organized message with flexible, spontaneous delivery. This new definition is the foundation of our approach.

This session is not about tips & tricks. Instead, it’s a serious, big-picture look at group communication in the virtual space. It’s about the skills/techniques you use to achieve your goal and manage the process effectively & efficiently.

Leadership Communication in the Virtual World

Executive Presence & Your Professional Brand

If you are a leader (or a manager aspiring to become one), you know that what you say and how you say it matters to those you lead. It is your responsibility to make sure that your intentions match others’ perceptions. This is not an easy task under normal circumstances and certainly not in the stressful circumstances of working from home.

During our time together, we’ll weave together three meaty concepts and give you insights and tools to hone your unique leadership style.

Together we’ll examine the intersection of

1. Business Communication that engages others in fruitful dialogue
2. Professional Branding that helps you “show up” for your teams every day
3. Executive Presence that inspires trust and stirs others to act

Our speakers, Dale Ludwig and Greg Owen-Boger, are both Certified Partners of the Bates organization and hold the Bates ExPI™ (Executive Presence Index) Coaching Certification.

Virtual Meetings That Work: Getting business done through remote meetings

Virtual Meetings That Work is designed for anyone who leads or participates in virtual meetings. Insights in this session also apply to virtual presentations, webinars, and remote training sessions.

In this session, we’ll discuss the fact that both meeting facilitators and attendees share a responsibility for making virtual meetings as effective and efficient as possible.

This is more than advice such as “show up on time and turn off your email.” For meeting facilitators, this is about creating and maintaining the conditions for a fruitful conversation to take place. For meeting attendees, this is about maintaining engagement and contributing fully.

Takeaways from this session include two tools: “Ground Rules for Effective Meetings,” which you can use to set team expectations, and Turpin’s “Framing Strategy Worksheet” to help you lay the foundation for every meeting you have.

Virtual Presentations That Work

Breakthrough to engage clients and staff

It’s one thing to be clear, concise, and in control of your message when you’re speaking to a group of people in a live conference room setting. It’s an entirely different thing to keep audience members attentive and engaged when presenting virtually.

It’s not just learning how to run the meeting software. That’s the easy part. The real issues are (1) getting people to want to participate and (2) communicating well using the technology so that what you say is actually heard and understood.

In this practical session, we will explore the skills and techniques it takes to communicate effectively in virtual settings, whether you’re conducting meetings, presentations, product demos, or video conferences.

The Orderly Conversation: Business Presentations Redefined

Business communication exists to move business forward. In a perfect world, that work is efficient and effective. Now, think about the last presentation or meeting you attended. Was it both efficient and effective?

No? You’re not alone. It’s time for a new approach, one that is practical and flexible enough to work in a variety of situations.

In this session, you will be introduced to the concept of The Orderly Conversation, which is a type of communication that combines a carefully organized message with flexible, spontaneous delivery. This means that while you prepare, you need to look ahead to the uncertainties of the conversation, and once the conversation starts, you need to adapt what was planned to what’s happening in the moment. And this is why the traditional approach of one-way speechmaking, which we all learned in school, falls short in business settings.

This session is not about tips and tricks. It’s about the skills and techniques you can use to achieve your goals.

Engaging Learners in the Orderly Conversation: No-nonsense Techniques for Engaging Today’s Learner

An obstacle to effective training is learner apathy in the classroom. As trainers, we need to stay relevant in today’s tough market and take responsibility for moving participants from ho-hum observers to engaged and passionate learners.

But how? One way is to conduct training sessions as if they are Orderly Conversations. An Orderly Conversation is one that is (a) carefully organized, well-designed and documented, and (b) flexibly executed with lively participation and input from the entire group. When trainers and facilitators engage learners in this fashion, learners are more likely to invest in the learning outcome and apply what they’ve learned back on the job.

The theory behind the Orderly Conversation will be discussed as well as insights and skills for engaging learners in the process. This will include cleaning out the old training toolbox to get rid of rusty rules, gimmicks, and anything else that simply doesn’t work.

Managing High-stakes Team Meetings: How to lead, how to contribute

Sad but true: Most meetings don’t move business forward as effectively or efficiently as they should. There are as many reasons for this as there are meetings that go off the rails.

We think that you, your team, your clients, and your business deserve something better.

In this session, we’ll discuss that fact that both meeting facilitators and every attendee share a responsibility for making meetings as effective and efficient as possible. This is more than advice such as “show up on time and turn off your phones.” For meeting facilitators, this is about creating and maintaining the conditions for a fruitful conversation to take place. For meeting attendees, this is about contributing fully.

Effective SMEs: How to Help Subject Matter Experts Facilitate Learning

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) bring depth of experience, credibility, and relevance to live instructor-led training. Their contributions and institutional knowledge are immeasurable.

Reliance on them in the training room also brings a certain amount of risk because SMEs are not, in most cases, experts in facilitation. It’s our responsibility then, as learning professionals, to do what we can to design learning events to play to their strengths and to coach them to be successful in the training room.

In this session we’ll explore ways to improve their likelihood of success. We’ll begin by identifying ways to design learning events specifically for SMEs, and end with non-threatening coaching techniques you can use to help them improve their delivery.

Executive Presence: What is it, and how can I achieve it?

Executive Presence: You know it when you see it, but what EXACTLY is it? Hint: It’s not just a person’s appearance and their ability to command a room. In this session, we’ll define executive presence based on the scientific work of Suzanne Bates, which serves as the foundation for her book, All the Leader You Can Be: The Science of Achieving Extraordinary Executive Presence.

Using her research and the 15 facets that Bates uses to define presence, we’ll discuss how these traits show up (or not) during everyday meetings and informal interactions with peers, direct reports, and clients. We’ll also explore how a strength in one area can cause blind spots and weaknesses elsewhere.

NOTE: This is not about stereotypes. It’s about how you can grow your self-awareness and learn to modify behaviors to improve how you are perceived by others.
