Now I Can Talk About It

I'm a native of Vancouver, BC, and a second-generation law enforcement officer. After getting my criminology degree from Simon Fraser University, I spent seventeen years as an officer with the Canada Border Services Agency, most of the time working the Canada/US land border. I've also lived and traveled extensively in Brazil. Now, I teach English to pay the bills, while also working as a freelance writer. I've written twelve books, all fiction, and I'm about to finish number 13.

A Career at the Border

This presentation ranges from 90 minutes to two hours, depending on time allotted for activities and discussion. It's aimed at Policing and Security students interested in law enforcement careers. I talk about what a Border Services Officer does, and compare/contrast selection and training, work environment, and pay and benefits with that of other policing agencies in Canada. Fun and thought-provoking activities finish things off.

Law at the Border

This presentation is aimed at law students with the goal of informing them of the unique legal environment of the border. The role of the Charter, search and seizure, arrest and detention, are all explored in detail. The differing character of the three main acts enforced by the CBSA is also explored (Customs, Immigration, Criminal Code). The presentation ranges from 90 minutes to two hours and can include some fun and informative activities at the end.
