Giuseppe Manzillo is a PhD Candidate at King's College London. His research focuses on how economic development and poverty reduction in developing economies are affected by security sector reform (SSR).
As an economist and defense expert with 20+ years’ expertise in the areas of public finance, international trade, fragility, violence, and post-conflict reconstruction, some of his latest projects include:
- Designing, as a KCL researcher, various questionnaires, surveys focusing on subjects such as ethnic integration through early education and long-term impact of peacekeeping participation on peacekeepers.
- Various cost-benefit analyses for World Bank investments in areas hosting migrants, refugees in the Horn of Africa and Kenya, and to support the economic integration of women in Nigeria.
- Designing - as part of a Transparency International Defense and Security program - a possible methodology to identify and counter corruption risks in international security assistance and peacebuilding operations as conducted by NATO, UN Department of Peace Keeping Operations (DPKO), and other regional organizations.
- Trade flows and policy analyses affecting trade and competitiveness in Palestine as part of a World Bank Palestine Trade Policy Note.
- Optimization of resource allocation and governance for the defense sector in Sub-Sahara African countries as part of a U.S. National Defense University Africa Center for Strategic Studies program
- Multiple trade flows and quantitative analyses for various regional studies as a trade economist of the World Bank Trade Department
Previously, Mr. Manzillo served as a Senior Adviser and Team Leader at NATO, both in operational theaters and at the HQ.
He holds a Master's degree in economics from Johns Hopkins, a Master's degree in public policy from George Washington, a Master's degree in defense policy analysis from U.S. Marine Corps University, and a Bachelor's degree in military governance and maritime science from University of Pisa, Italy.
