Through my experience with technology and research, I've learned that everything needs to be gender responsive. The way that we design research projects, market products and create software all need to account for the barriers that women face across a variety of contexts, and look at past methods of success pertaining to them.
I spent the better part of the COVID-19 pandemic, talking to my family in Kenya I watched as the girls I grew up with never went back to school. They started working and soon got married, falling pregnant during what was supposed to be our sophomore year of school.
When we evaluate the different sectors that create the access gap, we are surrounded by different capitalist solutions that never prioritize the biggest population, women. I’ve spent the last 2 years researching and developing technology centered around women, and touch on my experiences learning how to innovate with specific people in mind.
