Bio

Through my 25+ years working in public relations, I've helped corporations, non-profits, governments and individuals gain the skills and tools to communicate with confidence. I offer keynote speaking, corporate training, communications consulting and one-on-one coaching. Each presentation and workshop is customized to meet the needs of the audience.

How to Communicate for Success

We all want to have our voice heard and create a positive connection with others. In this interactive presentation/workshop, we’ll explore practical ways to strengthen your communications skills at work as well as with friends and family.

It starts with understanding how to adjust your communications style to meet the needs of your audience (based on their personality, interest and ability to process what you’re saying). From there, we’ll look at how to clear on your message, understand the role of emotions and facts, have a clear call to action and finally, the importance of body language.

How to Harness the Power of Storytelling

We now have countless technologies and ways to share information with our customers and target audience. Yet the age-old tool of storytelling is still the best way to make a personal connection so people tune in to what you’re saying. The art of storytelling can be weaved into all your communications. In this presentation we will break down the elements of a story, uncover what makes a good story, learn the importance of storytelling as well as how to use it in your social media, presentations, emails, social media and more.

How to Present Like a Pro

This presentation will help participants feel more confident, prepared and focused when presenting. We will discuss how to create presentations that connect with your audience, how much information is too much and the role of storytelling. Other areas covered include an understanding of body language, best use of power point, as well as active listening skills.

Media Relations 101 - How to Share Your Stories with the Media

It's time to take the fear out of working with the media. Content covered includes an overview of media relations (who are the media, what interests them), understanding key messaging, how to pitch to the media, interview techniques as well as responding to difficult questions. We will also look at what makes an interesting story, making the human connection.

How to Advocate for Kids with Disabilities

Raising a child with disabilities can be challenging, rewarding, frustrating and isolating. As a mother of a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and advocate living this journey, I will share some practical tips to help participants be their child’s voice.

In this presentation, participants will learn advocacy skills to help them:
• Get clear on their child’s diagnosis and needs
• Access support at school
• Navigate the medical system
• Deal with roadblocks
• Learn the importance of building a community of support
• Know when to take a break
• Be their child’s voice (when young) or megaphone (as they age)

Crisis Communications – How to take control when everything is out of control

Forest fires. Extreme Weather. Employee disruption. Every organization has a number of risk factors that could throw them into a crisis at any point. But how many have up-to-date crisis communications plans and trained staff who are able to respond quickly and with confidence? In this session we will explore your role in crisis communications in day one, the following days and wrapping up after the crisis is over. What key messages are needed when you know very little? Learn how to establish yourself as the authority and lead – and maintain it. You will gain insights on how to see and hear the things that can go sideways…and how to avoid them.

How to Communicate with Families - for healthcare and support workers

We all want what is best for the individuals we support. However, there are a number of barriers that can block clear communications - including personalities, emotions and understanding of the information being conveyed.

We will unpack how to be clear in your communications to avoid confusion and make a personal connection. Participants will feel more confident, prepared and focused when communicating with families.

Topics covered include:
• The power of storytelling – how our brain processes information through stories (why storytelling is a powerful way to communicate with families)
• Key messaging – being clear on the essential information you want to convey
• Audience – understanding your audience, how they receive information, what information they need and their ability to act upon what you are saying
• Emotions – role of emotions and valued based communications
• Facts – getting clear on the relevant facts, finding common ground
• Call to action

How to Turn Reactive into Proactive (Issues Management)

The key to successful issues management is taking control early on and ensuring a coordinated approach – both internally and with key external stakeholders. Learn essential tools and techniques to minimize the impact and duration of a negative issue. To avoid having your issue dragged through the media or becoming water cooler chatter, learn how to identify red flags early on and take control of the issue before it has legs.
