Communicating Across Differences

An important part of systems thinking is to integrate multiple perspectives and synthesize them into a framework or model that can describe and predict the various ways in which a system might react to change. Organizations tend to be complex with many people, institutions and risk factors involved. If an outcome depends on many interacting and adaptive parts and people, then the outcome cannot be analyzed or predicted with traditional methods. In this training, you will learn how systems thinking is a core skill that helps us all come to grips with not just our differences, but how to build authentic connections for our greater good.

Cultural Humility

Cultural Humility
Cultural humility, a process of reflection and lifelong inquiry, involves self-awareness of personal and cultural biases as well as awareness and sensitivity to significant cultural issues of others. Core to the process of cultural humility is the provider’s deliberate reflection of her/his values and biases.
Cultural humility is different from other culturally-based training ideals because it focuses on self-humility rather than achieving a state of knowledge or awareness. Cultural humility was formed in the physical healthcare field and adapted for therapists and social workers to increase the quality of their interactions with clients and community members. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
· Gain awareness of how culture affects communication
· Facilitate self-reflection and self-critique
· State the potential influence of power, privilege, the –isms and their own history on relationships with clients and colleagues
