Long Bio

Dr. Candace Reese is a Juneteenth scholar, writer, and lecturer. Dr. Reese works with corporations and colleges to celebrate Juneteenth and its significance beyond the holiday.

As the founder of the Juneteenth Pilgrimage, she leads an annual event where the descendants of John Menard Thomas, a slave to the founders of Galveston, meet on the island to take a pilgrimage journey from the Menard House, the oldest house in Galveston, where her foreparents were enslaved, to Ashton Villa, where the famed General Order No. 3 was believed to have been read by General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, freeing all slaves. The journey from the Menard House to Ashton Villa includes historic sites in Galveston where slaves could have learned of their freedom.

During her virtual Juneteenth Pilgrimages, she invites companies to meet her family and learn the history of the Juneteenth story and its significance to the Thomas family, who has been on the island for 175 years, and how this unique distinction helped make Juneteenth a state and federal holiday.

Dr. Reese is a researcher at Southern Methodist University and holds a Doctor of Liberal Studies degree with a focus in human development, humanities, and African American Studies. She holds a Master of Arts in English from Texas Southern University and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in African American Studies from the University of Houston. She has taught English and Humanities for the past two decades at Texas Southern University and Collin College.

Short Bio

Dr. Candace Reese is an African American Studies scholar and professor of English and Humanities. Candace Reese was born Candace Thomas in Galveston, Texas, minutes from where the Emancipation Proclamation was delivered on June 19, 1865. She is the descendent of John (Fluker) Thomas (1849-1912), who was present at General Gordon Granger's 3rd Order reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. Rev. James B. Thomas, her paternal grandfather, city councilman, and pastor, was instrumental in making Juneteenth a state and, ultimately, national holiday. Candace is a former Miss Juneteenth for the state of Texas. She hosts a Juneteenth Pilgrimage event with the Thomas family annually in Galveston. She is currently writing a book and filming a documentary on Juneteenth pilgrimages.

How Generational Storytelling Made Juneteenth a National Holiday

This presentation includes a retelling of the story told to our family about the moment my great-great-great parents learned they were free on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. I re-enact the story from my grandfather, Rev. James B. Thomas' proclamation on the stairs of Ashton Villa, to the city of Galveston that was delivered on Juneteenth 1976 before the city formally recognized Juneteenth as a day of commemoration.

Peace Talks: Exploring Family Stories about Juneteenth
1 hour
(View workshop agenda)

This workshop offers opportunities to share our family's stories about Juneteenth using the oral tradition. In this workshop, participants will brainstorm their earliest memories of Juneteenth. We will explore our individual and family responses to the holiday from a historical perspective. Our goal is to have meaningful dialogue about our family's history and our current attitudes to address the joy and pain of the holiday and to reconcile what it means to feel freely American.

  • Candace was a speaker for my company's Juneteenth celebration, and she was phenomenal! The way she wove her family history into her presentation was great. She not only gave us the history behind Juneteenth, but she was also able to describe how it relates and resonates to the issues that we have today. Her presentation was educational, informational, eye-opening, and fun! Candace herself was professional, personable with a great sense of humor and the ability to make you feel comfortable with a subject some would deem difficult. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a speaker regarding Juneteenth to book Candance with no hesitation!

  • Dr. Candace Reese is a gifted historian and storyteller!! I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Candace deliver a presentation on "Juneteenth Pilgrimage" during my Psychology of Conflict course at SMU. Her gift for storytelling allows you to tag along on a journey as she tells her family's story from a historical perspective, while asking thought provoking questions to challenge you (in a very good way). If you have the opportunity to hear Dr. Candace deliver her Junteenth Pilgrimage presentation (or any other presentation), you'll be so glad you did because she is truly gifted. She brings a joyful energy when she speaks, naturally captivating her audience as she connects with them to tell this story. Thank you Dr. Candace for graciously sharing with our class and I look forward to see how your journey and upcoming book touches the lives of our world today.
