Bio

Bree Wiles is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Telecare Corporation and speaks at national conferences on the intersectionality of mental health, self-harm, and queerness, with a focus on youth in particular.

She has worked with queer youth in multiple settings including in the medical field, providing therapy, working with various GSA’s, and creating programs within institutions and agencies to provide queer youth with more equitable care. Bree presents at conferences around the country where she focuses on her own story as a queer teenager who self-harmed and the intersectionality between mental health and queerness. She has extensive lived and professional experience on how to assist queer youth with interventions to replace self-harming behavior.

She has provided various LGBTQIA+ trainings to doctors, nurses, and other social workers at UCLA hospital, various non profits, DCFS, DMH, probation, and multiple school districts. She has put on LGBTQIA+ anti-bully events, helped create LGBTQIA+ programs in multiple non profits, and created more visibility in various institutions that she has worked in.

Her own story has inspired many queer youth and has provided awareness on how prevalent self-harm and suicide are within the queer community. With self-harm and suicide on the rise for queer youth who are grappling with a society that has tried to silence them, Bree is passionate about providing awareness, education, and using her lived experience as a queer woman to make impactful change in the mental health world.

Embracing Our Scars: Self-Harm 101

Self-harm is still a topic that is not talked about enough, especially with the growing concern for the safety of LGBTQIA+ youth. LGBTQIA+ youth are coming out at earlier ages, thus bringing to attention the added risks for this population. Many LGBTQIA+ youth end up engaging in some form of self-destructive behavior from dealing with the stigma and negative socialization around them. Within the LGBTQIA+ youth population, self-harm alongside depression and suicide is especially common. This disparity shows the importance of providing LGBTQIA+ youth with resources that affirm their identities. As professionals and parents, it is important to understand the types of self-harm, average age range when it can occur, causes, populations, risk factors, and self-harm in connection with mental health and suicide. It is imperative to provide protective factors for LGBTQIA+ youth in helping to replace self-harming behaviors with positive coping strategies.
