Navigating the New Generation of Leaders

The new wave of leaders is upon us. Previously, we would assume the individuals with the longest tenure would be the ones in leadership roles but that is no longer the case.

Organizational leaders are found in all generations in the workforce and understanding how to identify talent is essential to the growth and sustainability of an organization. Retaining, training, and spotting talent is not easy and communicating across generations can be difficult. This interactive training will bring to light organizational challenges and opportunities to create a stronger and more cohesive generationally diverse workforce.

Moving Differences into Opportunities

We all have biases whether we’re conscious of them or not and they impact our interactions with others, how we make decisions and our overall outlook of the future. In fact, our brains are even hard wired to have preferences for certain things and an adversity to others. This becomes an issue when we don’t consciously recognize our biases and preferences.

When we make statements or act without taking into consideration others’ viewpoints and values, we can easily offend sand exclude someone. While potentially subtle, these statements or actions over time can do huge damage and destroy relationships, make people feel unwelcome, and isolated. Even with the best intentions, it’s important to remember that it’s not about our intent, it’s about our impact.

Bridging the Conversation Gap

Not everyone thinks, acts, and feels the same way as you do. We all come from different experiences, backgrounds, and DNA, which can sometimes lead to us to butt heads. And being “different” definitely isn’t easy, whether you’re the only woman or person of color in your office, or the only person of a particular religious or political belief on your team. Or perhaps you just have a different way of looking at a project, and having your voice heard in a sea of the same opinions feels like you’re constantly trying to find a life jacket.

Alissa will empower individuals who sometimes feel like outsiders by providing them with the tools to have constructive conversations with their peers and provide a gentle wakeup call for those on the “inside,” who are doing the idea squashing.

Moving Past Your High School Cafeteria

Think back to your high school cafeteria. If your experience was anything like mine, people tended to sit and interact with people who looked like them, had similar interests, and were in the same classes. Rarely did people venture out to meet someone new. What does this say about our inclination to make friends with people who look, and act like us? In general, we’re going to connect with who we’re going to connect with, but how do we make sure we don’t let those personal connections create walls and barriers between “us” and “them”?

Humanize Your Workplace

Our workforces are more diverse than ever. Teams are working across geography, generations, and cultures… From virtual spaces and varied mindsets. So how do we achieve authentic understanding in the workplace with so many different people in the mix? It begins with communicating across our differences and with candor.

But it’s one thing to talk about communicating more effectively, and another to implement strategies—especially during those frantic times in the office when you’re under a deadline, feel pressure, and are addressing issues with people who you don’t always see eye to eye with. According to a study conducted at the University of Kansas, it takes an average of 50 hours to turn an acquaintance into a friend, and 200 hours to make a close friend. Authentic communication and relationship building takes time! It’s essential to understand what communication means in the workplace and how to effectively use this time to build relationships that make a difference.

  • Working with Alissa is a pleasure! Her genuine interest in our business culture and desired outcomes showed through her prompt and professional communication, thorough preparation, and skillful facilitation. The staff raved about the “Working with Multiple Generations” workshops because Alissa is knowledgeable, personable, and practical. • A great and engaging speaker. I threw Alissa into the proverbial lion's den: a semi-unscripted video-conference interview/ remote seminar with three classes of first-year undergraduates in Upstate New York all researching Millennial workforce issues for an essay assignment. For the entire session, she fielded their questions (and mine), answered them thoughtfully and authoritatively, held their interest (no small feat), and was generally wonderful. I was nervous about pulling the whole thing off, but Alissa was amazing and really made the whole experience not only valuable, but enjoyable. 10/10 will do it again!

  • Recently I had the pleasure of attending an HR SHRM meeting where Alissa was the presenter. She has a very engaging presentation style that captivated the audience. Her topic was Millennial Engagement. She really is an expert in this field. She completely covered the topic from what millennials need to how best manage and retain them. At the end of her presentation she took the time to thoroughly answer all questions. I am on the programming committee for this HR group. In speaking with some of the attendees, we received very positive feedback. I would highly recommend partnering with Alissa if you need to attract, manage and retain your millennial workforce.

  • Alissa's presentation called "The Future of Work ... How Tech & The Next Generation Impact Experienced Workers" was extremely insightful! I've been to a lot of employment-related presentations and find myself knowing most of the information already, but Alissa's content was fresh and interesting. She conveyed powerful ways employees should look at adapting their skills to meet the needs of the future job market. Her pleasant demeanor and approachability are an extra bonus! Well done!
