Akshay Garud is a distinguished Bioengineering student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), set to earn his degree in 2025, along with a minor in Computer Science. Educated at an institution with a rich history dating back to 1867, Akshay is blending biological sciences with advanced computing to pave new technological paths. He excels in programming languages, including Java, Python, and C++, and is proficient with software tools such as Atom, R Programming, MATLAB Octave, and Node.js. His technical abilities extend to Microsoft Excel, Onshape, Autocad, Autodesk Inventor, and Imagej. Akshay has also honed 3D Printing, API Testing, and Data Visualization skills, underpinned by a solid theoretical base in Linear Algebra, Machine Learning, and Statistics.
Akshay’s academic achievements complement his hands-on experience gained through multiple internships. He conducted research at UIUC’s Gritton Lab, where he focused on the neural responses of mice in AI-generated mazes, combining his expertise in bioengineering and computer science. Additionally, he interned at TrussHealth, a startup leveraging artificial intelligence for enhanced patient monitoring, where he contributed to developing web applications and API testing. His bioinformatics work at Base Pair Inc. involved RNA-seq data processing and genomic data analysis, which are critical areas for advancing medical technology.
Apart from his academic and professional pursuits, Akshay is an active member of the UIUC community. He contributes to the Biomedical Engineering Society and participates in MedLaunch, engaging in projects that marry engineering with healthcare solutions. His passion for music is evident in his participation with the Illini Awaaz A Cappella Team, where he performs at various campus events, enhancing the cultural atmosphere. Akshay is also dedicated to community service, volunteering with HomeFirst Services of Santa Clara County to aid people experiencing homelessness. Outside of academia and service, his interests include hiking, basketball, and reading, which help maintain his well-rounded lifestyle. His leadership qualities are further underscored by his status as an Eagle Scout and a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
