Aamina L. Hennings is a part of an encouraging way to view life in a world that is not always conducive to positive productivity - DNA Generation. The basis of this idea as pertaining to youth of all ages is the fact that no matter what one has been exposed to or no matter what one’s DNA says about their future in today’s society, we all have the choice to break cycles and pursue a life that is one to be personally proud of each day. Aamina was a School Counselor for 9 years and has continued making every effort to help youth outside the four walls of her office. Dedrick Hennings, Aamina’s husband, has encouraged her as she creates/posts videos (Aamina’s Moment on youtube.com), participate in online posts/dialogue that’s encouraging to all who are connected to her on Facebook and Twitter.
Aamina’s passion to help today’s youth, in any way she could, began with her experiences of her brother who struggled with addictions all of her life, the 90 days her and her mother spent in a homeless shelter, and the years of living in public housing in Hammond, Indiana. Aamina had a great opportunity to represent Lake County of Indiana as a young participant in the Governor’s Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana. This opportunity allowed Aamina to travel throughout the state to meet with other youth and advocates of a Drug-Free Indiana; this experience was just the beginning of Aamina’s desire to help youth of all backgrounds and lifestyles. After receiving her B.A. in Sociology, M.S. in Education with a minor in School Counseling, and her pursuit for her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, Aamina has a great love to see others succeed in and out of the classroom. The voice of DNA Generation is based on the well-being, success, and motivational aspects of adolescents, teens, and young adults.
